Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery & Brow Lifts
Dr. Joel Kopelman Talks About Cosmetic And Reconstructive Eyelid Surgery & Brow Lifts
With offices both in New Jersey and New York City, Plastic Surgeon Dr. Joel Kopelman is certainly in high demand. A specialist, with over 30 years experience, in both facial cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, Dr. Kopelman’s biography is an impressive read that would be enough to calm even the most apprehensive of patients.
In between his busy schedule, The Cosmetic Tourist was lucky enough to catch up with Dr. Kopelman, who spoke in more detail about some of the procedures he regularly performs.
Why The Demand For Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)
As a face gets older some find their eyes becoming slightly hidden by droopy skin, wrinkles or fat deposits, and for many it can become a concern that an ‘aging look’ is beginning to set in. This is a genuine worry, as many can relate to the old adage that when looking at a person's face, the eye's are one of the main focal points.
It is with patients who highlight these types of age based image concerns that Dr. Kopelman really enjoys applying his years of experience to help with offering a unique eyelid surgery (Blepharoplasty) solution for the individual - “The earliest signs of aging manifest here” he says.
Dr. Kopelman points out that with cosmetic eyelid surgery the patient really benefits from a simple cosmetic procedure that can give them a lot of satisfaction with the result, whilst encountering some of the more minimal of surgical downtimes.
Upper And Lower Lid Cosmetic Surgery Procedures And Incisions
There are many variations with both upper and lower lid cosmetic procedures, such as the removing of extra skin from the upper eyelids and then sculpting any excess fat from the middle or inner corners. Whereas on the lower lid, the standard procedure is to shift the excess fat around, resculpting the lid and/ or removing sections of it.
There are also different areas where one can make an incision - If there is no excess skin to be removed from the lower lid area then the incision can actually be placed inside the eyelid (and thus be performed with no visible scarring) - This is referred to as a Transconjunctival approach.
Whereas another lower lid incision is actually placed below the eyelash, which allows the cosmetic surgeon to remove excess skin as well as fat, and coupled with the use of today’s very fine sutures there is minimal scarring to be had.
Blepharoplasty Procedures That Conserve Lower Eyelid Fat
But it was when talking about lower eyelid procedures that Dr. Kopelman began to elaborated on his own work. Over the years he has developed blepharoplasty procedures which tend not to remove, but conserve the lower eyelid fat whilst “redistributing it into areas that need augmentation”.
These precise procedures that focus more on the redistribution of fat than the removal of it can really make a difference to the overall outcome of the surgery, which Dr. Kopelman says, also helps lead to a positive change in a patient’s self image concerns.
Cosmetic Coronal Brow Lifts By Dr. Kopelman
There are a number of different techniques for brow lift surgical procedures, with many being done in concert with upper eyelid surgeries. Dr. Kopelman mainly performs the endoscopic browlift (and sometimes the Coronal brow lift) at both of his practices in New Jersey and New York.
The Coronal lift is often regarded as the standard procedure for brow lifting, as it extends from ear to ear, across the scalp. The scalp (along with being incised) is then pulled backwards, away from the forehead.
Cosmetic Endoscopic Brow Lifts Less Invasive Than Other Lifts
Whilst there are other less invasive versions of the Coronal lift, the newer endoscopic technique is generally regarded as one of the lest invasive cosmetic brow lift procedures around.
Introduced in the early 1990’s, the Endoscopic brow lift allows Cosmetic Surgeons to insert tiny endoscopes under the patient’s skin, and scalp, allowing the surgeon to view nerves, and muscle placements before making large incisions, and moving the whole scalp. Many Doctors view this as a more precise, and safer surgery that enables a patient to keep the nerves that supply the sensation to their forehead intact, and fully operational.
Like any plastic surgeon worth his salt, Dr. Kopelman prefers to decide which brow lift procedure to use on a case by case basis, after an in-depth consultation has taken place. Brow lifts are a popular cosmetic procedure and with so many enquiries by potential patients who are considering these sort of surgeries, Dr. Kopelman thoroughly explores the subject on his website.
Every Cosmetic Procedure Is Unique
Each and every procedure comes with it’s own unique challenges - This is what Dr.Kopelman (and all plastic surgeons you would think) finds so exciting and challenging about performing surgery on his patients.
Cosmetic Surgery is all about boosting the self image and all of Dr. Kopelman's procedures are performed to help make a patient feel even happier about themselves, and it seems apt to leave with a final thought from the doctor, when asked about what he says to his patients;
“You can’t be about someone else - Do it for yourself”.
