Face Lift Surgery

What does the term face lift surgery mean?

Face lift surgery is one of the most efficient and effective methods of eliminating signs of aging from the face including wrinkles, uneven tone, patches, fine lines etc. Face Lift Surgery Also known as Rhytidectomy, the surgery is basically aimed at removing visible age changes on the neck and skin. These may include:

–          Jowls of the lower facial region created by loss of normal muscle tone

–          Mid-facial sagging

–          Accumulation of fat and sagging skin that appears below the lower jaw and chin – or the presence of double chin even in individuals with normal weight

–          Visible creasing of the lower eyelids

–          Displaced facial fat

–          Visible, prominent creasing from the nose till the edge of the lips

The face lift surgeries can even be performed independently, or in combination with various other similar procedures including brow lift, facial rejuvenation, nose lift, eyelid surgeries etc depending upon the needs and requirements of the patient.
It must be noted that face lift surgery cannot change the natural facial appearance; neither does it halt the natural process of aging.

What are the different risks and complications associated with face life surgeries?

Just like all other surgeries and invasive medical procedures performed globally, face lift surgeries also have several potential risks and complications that patients must discuss with their surgeons prior to the procedure. All patients must ensure that their medical histories are assessed beforehand. Leading plastic surgeons around the world first acquire the consent of their patients before starting surgery as part of medical protocol.
Some of the common risks and complications that are seen before, during or after face lift surgeries include:

–          Unwanted Scarring after surgery

–          Abnormal bleeding, or formation of hematoma

–          Accumulation of fluid within the tissues, a condition known as seroma

–          Infection at the site of incisions

–          Delayed healing of the wounds

–          Formation of blood clots

–          Deep venous thrombosis

–          Altered sensation in the region

–          Swelling at the surgical site

–          Pain during and after surgery

–          Dehiscence, or separation of the wounds

–          Loss of symmetry and proportion

–          Irritation at the site of sutures

–          Chances of re-surgery due to unsatisfactory results

–          Loss of normal color or elasticity of the skin

–          Damage to nerves and vessels such as arteries, veins and capillaries

–          Irritation caused by suture or other materials used during surgery

What are the steps involved in face lift surgeries?

  1. Administration of Anesthesia: To ensure a completely painless and comfortable surgery, the surgeon will administer anesthesia to sedate the patient. Eyelid surgeries are generally performed on general anesthesia. The drugs and mode of anesthesia administration depend upon the surgeon’s preferences and the medical status of the patient.Face Lift Procedure
  2. Creating suitable incisions: Based on the preference of the surgeon, and the requirements of the patient, there are a few incisions that can be used to achieve the desired results.  Depending upon the amount and location of extra skin and fat present on the face and neck, the surgeon can either perform a neck lift, traditional/conventional face lift or the limited incision face lift. The incision used for the traditional face lift is larger than the one used in limited incision face lifts – but both are equally effective. The incisions are created in areas where can easily be concealed within the natural folds and contour of the skin without getting obvious. Once the suitable incision has been, the surgeon carefully distributes fatty tissues evenly, sculpts away unwanted jowls, excises excess skin and repositions the underlying tissues for the desired effect. Once this has been achieved, the skin is then reoriented for incision closure.
  3. Closing the incision: Incisions are closed with the help of suitable absorbable sutures or skin adhesives including tapes.

Recovering from face lift surgery:

The results of the facial balance surgery can be appreciated immediately after the procedure has been completed. It is important for all patients to visit their surgeons for post-surgical follow-up visits for regular evaluation of the implant status. Face Lift Medical Patients may be prescribed antibiotics and analgesics to prevent post surgical pain and infection from occurring. In case of any complications, patients must report back to the hospital immediately for proper treatment and management.

Once the surgery has been completed, patients can flaunt a more youthful, toned and flawless skin without any unwanted fat deposits or signs of aging. Because this surgery cannot halt the natural process of aging, the results of the procedure are not permanent and can be altered by weight fluctuation and aging. Revisional surgery can be performed if this happens, to restore natural contour and shape on the face and neck once again.
